Day Of The Dead
Special Noise Event
October 10th

As an offering we will be creating a living altar for us to
honor those who inspired us in life. This includes our friends, families be they two legged, four legged, or winged.
The intention here is to create a place to remember and celebrate the lives of those we loved who have gone before us . Honoring the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth.....

We begin this season with two workshops:

Sugar Skulls and Paper flowers
Saturday September 13th at Noon
@ City of the World Gallery
1229 Casino Center
Las Vegas, NV 89104

Personal Shrine boxes and display boards
Saturday September 20th at Noon
The Box Office
1129 Casino Center
Las Vegas, NV 89104

The cost for these workshops will be $5.00 per person to cover supplies and use of the space.

We will be featuring a large Urn that will be the centerpiece in the central Ofrenda altar at Noise.
The purpose of the Urn is a vessel for messages and prayers for the dead.
Another purpose is to let go of what no longer serves us.

Backing up our data . . . er, community

Hello friends and family of the Vortex on tribe.net:

I've been moderating groups on tribe.net for over five years now, and tribe.net is my most deeply loved online community. That said, as you may have noticed, it has been very difficult of late to log in and use the system. While tribe works away at resolving the issues, I believe it is prudent to "back up" our data. Just like you would back up your laptop if it started acting funny and frequently crashing.

Of course Vegas Vortex has www.vegasvortex.com, and also a Yahoogroup, but there is a special quality to having an interactive platform like tribe.

I've been testing Facebook for several months now and I am impressed with the stability and scalability of the platform.

This is the Facebook analog for our tribe here by the same name.

If you use Facebook, please join us there. If you haven't used Facebook yet, I'm not here to endorse it or suggest you join, but if you like tribe you might like it.

I don't know if our esteemed Vegas Vortex organizers will set up a VV group on Facebook -- it's up to them -- but in any case, Vegas Vortex events are always welcome to be posted on Sacred All Night Fire Circle, both here on tribe.net and on the new Facebook page. So this email is just an invitation to check it out, and discover yet one more way to connect to your family of fire.

Stamp Collector?

Does anyone in our family collect stamps?
I inherited a box full of stamps - 100's of them.
some are in small storage containers, many are loose - some canceled, most not.
Many seem to be from Nazi era Germany. But many years are represented.

I don't have the interest or the bandwidth to go through them all.

I am willing to barter with anyone who is interested.

Vegas, jugglers

Hello Vortex,
I am very new to tribe. I may have missed an earlier post. Im looking for Las Vegas jugglers to meet up with and practice our art. I do fire devil sticks, torches,knives,contact juggling, and balls up to 4. am interested in many other forms. I would like to get into contact staff,walking globes, poi, and stuff iv never heard of =) If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Doors will open at 7pm. We will have special two for one tickets to the show, and entrance to the Ball will be free with your ticket stub! Live dj music from Master Leo Diaz, special midnight ritual, and lots of astonishing wonders await! Creative and festive costumes and masks are encouraged but not required.

Saturday, October 25th from dusk til sunrise, we will gather at the Goddess Temple in Cactus Springs, forty minutes away from Las Vegas. The evening will commence with Desert Moon Circle facilitating the opening ritual, a ceremony of honoring the shifting seasons of the year, and honoring our intentions for the rest of the night's magick... Special altars will be created by Kaya, contact her at moonshadow2@cox.net if you'd like to help create the visual, artistic magic of the night. After the ceremony, we will go straight on into our all-night sacred fire circle, drumming, dancing and singing up the sun.

If you'd like to make a donation of firewood or money to the Goddess Temple, please feel free to do so, but there is no fee for this evening's event. Please remember to bring warm clothes- (the desert gets chilly this time of year), plenty of water to drink and to share, finger food snacks for the food altar, drums and instruments, chants and poetry, chairs and a flashlight. No pets, drugs or alcohol, please.

Sunday evening, October 26th, starting at 7pm, we will gather here at the House of Mystery, for an enchanted evening of Community Relaxation and Re-Integration. There will likely be time for sharing music, magic or other mysteries. Please bring food and drink to share, as well as your plates and utensils, and whatever you need to serve your offering. Phoenx Fire: Less than a month away!

Dear friends,

It’s less than a month until we gather together to drum, dance, sing,
and journey to transformation! The Council and Staff have been working
hard to prepare for our gathering, and we are very excited to see many
of you soon.

There is a wonderful program of workshops being planned, offered by
talented members of our community including drumming with Bright Hawk,
and dance with Robin Sol. (A complete workshop list will be posted
soon.) Our three opening rituals will be organized by our local clans:
Bay Area Spark Collective, Redwood Nights, and SoCal Sacred Fire
Community – in conjunction with gathering attendees like you, who’ll
participate in ritual planning on site. We’re expecting some fantastic
vendors in the Merchant Village, including an excellent food vendor. And
remember that our reasonable registration price includes three dinners
and a community breakfast on the last morning!

Please tell your friends to have a look at the fabulous slide show of
the gathering by our own Shimmering Wolf, which is now posted on the
firefamilygathering.org web site (look on the top banner for the link).

The next price cutoff is this Sunday, July 20. To help your cash flow,
we will extend the balance due date for new registrations to accept a
50% deposit by July 20 with the balance due by August 4, the end of
registration for this year. We hope that this will help you decide to
make a commitment now if you haven’t already. [Note: if you’ve already
registered, your balance is still due by July 21.]

p.s. Despite the 1700+ lightning fires raging in California, the nearest
to our gathering site are the fires in Big Sur that are over 80 miles
from our camp. Rangers on site tell us there is no smoke or atmospheric
appearance of there being a fire, aside from the magnificent sunsets.

Does Waterford House call to you?

In bittersweet joy I must announce that the current residents of the Waterford House will be leaving this home on September the first.

I will be moving in with Liz Greene (two doors down from the McBride House of Mystery), and Boone and Ruffels will be moving on as well.
We do this with the intention that it is for the good of all involved, and that we will continue to strengthen the bonds of friendship and community that have been established here.

This does mean, however, that the house is up for grabs. It would be nice to keep it in the community.
If anyone is looking to move into a beautiful three (or four) bedroom home, five minutes drive from The Strip, please let us know ASAP.
Of course, the pool and lovely backyard with putting green are included :-)
The rent is currently $2000 plus utilities - but includes landscaping and pool maintenance fees.

The Landlady lives two doors down, and we've had a good relationship with her since we moved in.
She is understandably insistent that any new residents be financially stable, and that they will keep the house in good shape.
A cat is probably negotiable, but it is not a good home for larger pets.

Just wanted to share my joy with you all.

Last week I signed my contract to be a keyboardist in Cirque du Soleil's production of KA at the MGM Grand.
Needless to say, I am delighted and excited, and a bunch of other -iteds all at the same time.

I've been in communication with the Cirque folks for several years now, and have been campaigning hard for a job.
It was not until I actually met KA Musical Director Richard Oberacker that things fell into place.
Never underestimate the power of begging.

To start out, I'm going to be an on-call alternate for the keyboard book, but they've already booked me for several weeks in August. It seems likely that I can work into a full-time gig within a year or so. This is actually great for me, as I can keep performing with Wicked Tinkers and the various other shows here in town until a full-time gig comes along.

Interestingly, my stated intention at Mysterium this year was to manifest a path that would allow me to continue to live and work in Las Vegas. Let's call that one "accomplished".

Lead into Gold.

I just wanted to give you a heads up on some policy changes I am
about to institute:

• We are going to be bringing
in 3 security officers to help with all events in the showroom

• I am planning on making
the entrance to the lounge the main door for your event to verify all
patrons are ID’d and are not bringing in outside beverages

• We will also be closing
the parking lot once it is full to prevent us from towing cars

• The fire exit from the
showroom will remain closed during the duration of the event

These items are necessary to better serve the patrons and the
property. These changes will be going into effect June
6th and will be the new standard for all showroom/property wide events.
Please call me prior to the event so we can discuss any pending items.

I am trying to make SoCal Sacred Fire work for my schedule but not sure if I can do it so soon after moving, especially considering that I am already going to be on the road for half of June . . . time will tell. If YOU can be in Southern California during the last week of June, a delightful fire awaits.

If I read the schedule right, there will be two juicy all night fire circles. The site is not far from San Diego or LA. We've been watching flights and Southwest has some deals for $59 each way, in case you're not up for driving.

Who else from the Vegas Vortex is going to this? Perhaps we can collaborate on travel plans . . . If I go, I might fly in and rent a car to save travel time.

The Current Evolution of the Alchemical Fire Circle

Aloha Friends and Family!
As we prepare for a summer full of ecstatic exploration, sacred engagement and re-union around the Fire, I'm dropping in to share some writing I've been working on, in partnership with Spinner, Magnus and Joshua. As many of you know, we have been collaborating on a unique experiment called "Fires Rising" in Pennsylvania for the last 4 years, that has focused on delving deeply into traditional and modern alchemical metaphors and processes. We're aware that many stories have been told about the magic and mysteries of those fires - and that some of what you have heard may not have made sense. When new visions unfold and new experiments are run, they are often challenging to understand from outside the laboratory in question.

The document; "The Current Evolution of the Alchemical Fire Circle", is a summation of the goals the four of us have had, the learnings we gained over the last three summers, and is an indicator of the direction toward which our collective highest vision has us aimed. The document was written primarily for the purpose of coming to consensus with each other on what our current understandings and agreements are of this particular version of "The Work" going into Summer 2008.

If we haven't played together for a while, this is a way for you to at least get a glimpse into what the four of us have been brewing.

Many of the principles detailed also inform the Vegas Vortex Mayfire and Hawaii Fire Tribe Gatherings, and will be foundational to two new laboratories we are beginning to work in this year as we seed the Alchemical Fire Circle into the Free Spirit Gathering in Maryland ( http://freespiritgathering.org/fsg/index.html ), and the Wisteria Corn Stalk Festival in Ohio ( http://www.wisteria.org/cornstalk.htm ). Why: Because it’s been way too long since we’ve seen our friends and family in Las Vegas! As always, the Waterford parties are all about deepening and strengthening ties within our community. If that is your *WILL* as well, PLEASE join us in this delightful act of transformational magick.

We’re lighting the candles, setting out the food, and heating up the tub. As usual, we ask that everyone bring an offering of food or beverages to share with their community. Being that it will be around dinner time, entrees are particularly encouraged.

The house concert will feature the band COYOTE GRACE – who will begin around 6PM.

They are a delightful and fascinating folk duo, and they could really use our support as they work to develop an audience in this part of the country. When I found that they were passing through Vegas on their way to another gig, I asked them if they could do a couple sets here. I am very excited to hear them live, to get the chance to hang with them in person, and to support –as a community- these wonderful musicians.

We are requesting a donation of $10 per person that will go directly to the band to help offset their travel costs. (You know what gas costs these days!) If you can’t do $10, give what you can. If you can’t give money, come anyway!

TICKETS:
Tickets to The Dark Skies Arts Festival, June 19-22 at Mojave Drums near Meadview, Arizona are going on sale this Saturday 4/12/08 at twelve noon PST under the following price structure:
FIRST TIER: 75 tickets @ $75
SECOND TIER: 150 tickets @ $95
THIRD TIER: The remaining 75 tickets will be $125
Gift Tickets: we have a very limited number of gift tickets available where we trade you admission for your work on site. See below.

ATTENDANCE CAPS AND NO GATE SALES THIS YEAR
We are capping attendance at 300 and there will be NO GATE SALES this year! Advance ticket sales will cut off about a week out from the event. Under 18 with parents only, kids under 12 are free. No in-out, no pets.

Dark Skies is the southern Nevada regional burn, now to be held across the dam in Arizona! All of Burning Man’s 10 principals apply including leave no trace, no vending and the gift economy.

THEME CAMPS
We are requesting that all theme camps register and determine the minimum required amount of space that you can fit into. We are also asking most participants to drop their camping gear and park out by the front gate in order to keep the event site open and allow art cars, pedestrian traffic, and bicycles to traverse the site safely. There’s plenty of room on this site for our event, we just have to use it judiciously and creatively. Please please please register your theme camp and art so we know who’s coming!

FIRE
Dark Skies 2008 is operating in a high fire season, and in an area of pristine high desert in a beautiful Joshua Tree Forest. Dark Skies Fire Safety will be operating under the jurisdiction of Meadview Arizona Fire Dept. All final decisions regarding fire will be up to them.

• Fire performers will be allowed i/e: poi staffs breathers and all other hand held fire performance toys.
• Small propane flame effects; ie hand held puffers and small lpg flame effects with neither having a vertical flame length exceeding 10ft unless pre approved will be allowed.
• Fire barrels; fire barrels will be provided and maintained by event staff and will be in community areas.
• No personal burn barrels and fireplaces unless pre-approved in advance of the event.
• All generators used will be required to have an abc fire extinguisher and a pointed shovel within 20 ft at all times.
• Tentative fire times will be between 7pm and sunrise. Fire times will be subject to blackout in case of winds sustained in excess of 12 mph.
• All fire artists and participants must check in with DSFS. DSFS has the final say when it comes to fire of any kind.
• Smoking is to be conducted on developed and groomed areas only, no smoking is allowed in the vegetated areas of the event site. Leave no trace; never let it hit the ground.
• Fireworks of any kind are illegal and banned 100% at this event.
• All fire activities will be restricted to fire performance areas and then only at pre approved times. We will clearly mark these areas on site.

Important fire information; All fire activities may be banned in the case of a regional “red flag alert”. A red flag alert occurs when high winds regionally create a situation whereby all fire activities are banned. This is not the same as the high fire season ban which runs April 15 – Nov 15 and for which we are applying for variances too for this event. This is also NOT the same situation we had last time where CCFD “stuck it to us” at the last minute and bummed a lot of people out. Our hosts want to see fire at this event. But we have to play by their rules. Lets hope for low winds on the weekend of the event!

The heart of any regional event is the volunteers, and we love our volunteers! We have limited Volunteer opportunities available for Dark Skies.

Party and Missing Clothes.

Interesting how well these two topics work together, don't you think?

If you are missing an article of clothing (particularly swimsuits - go figure), It may be showing up at Renee's annual Closet swap this Sunday.

It's amazing how many bits and pieces go unclaimed at the end of our parties.
We can no longer keep track of what belongs to whom, and as we have not received any inquiries about missing clothes in the last many months, we can only assume that these pieces are orphans.

They are all going to the swap, where they can be claimed by their owners.
If unclaimed at the end of the swap, they will be given to a charity of Renee's choosing.

Also - Please mark April 20th on your calendars as the next WATERFORD HOUSE GATHERING!
As announced earlier, this will be a house concert with special musical guests, Coyote Grace.

We are pleased to announce that the pre event budget for DS ‘08 is posted for your perusal, dissection, and discussion.

There’s still a couple items missing and we actually got the Lincoln County numbers this afternoon so those are wrong. And yes ‘vehicles’ does indeed have an “H” in it. But you’ll get the idea of what it costs to produce this event. Based on this, and a senior staff meeting happening this weekend, we anticipate TICKETS GOING ON SALE, ON SATURDAY MARCH 1ST AT 12 NOON PST .

When my dear friend, Berta introduced me to their music a while back, I took to these two immediately. I am deeply impressed with their expressive lyrics and wonderful musicianship. When I heard that they were going to be passing through Las Vegas, I immediately nabbed ‘em for a party.

Hoop on the loose...

Greetings
Hope everyone is recovering well! Last night I brought some hoops for the purpose of sharing, with no regrets! But now it makes me sad to say that my LED hoop is missing. I looked in every corner of the Aruba and never spotted it. This hoop had ten slow changing rainbow colored lights. The tubing is white and was decorated with black and red stripe gaffer tape.

I work at an innercity at risk school and my kids perform with the LED hoops I provide.

Dark Skies Fire Arts Festival!

Greetings and much dusty love from the Dark Skies Fire Arts Festival!

Currently we are waiting on the cost recovery numbers from the BLM and costs from Lincoln County on top of those. Once we have all of that we will be able to produce a working budget and price the tickets logically (who knew?).

We will then announce the start of ticket sales. The tickets are printed and boy are they purty! It’s been somewhat quiet around here at DS HQ the past few months but rest assured that the hamsters are working overtime on this year’s event. We have much to announce, we have much to discuss, we have many needs from you the community as well. This is just a short note to let you know that the dates and location have been set.
June 19-22, 2008 and yes it will be on Delamar Lake in Lincoln County.

Two weeks ago I was chatting with my landlord and he gave me some bad news - the house that he has lived in for over thirty years, and where I have parked my RV for the past 18 months, is in foreclosure, and he does not think it's within his means to salvage the situation. I have been told that the house goes on the auction block on February 8th.

I am writing this to see if anyone in the community would be interested in renting a space in their yard for my RV and I to live. I am a quiet, drama-free 32-year old. I've taught anthropology at the College of Southern Nevada since 2002. My RV is a 2002 29' 5th wheel, pulled by an F-350. I'm 47' long hitched. I expect to be around a lot during the semester, and "on the road" during breaks. I can provide references on request.

In a perfect world, I'm looking for:

- a 35' x 15' spot for my RV
- two parking spaces for my vehicles (street is fine)
- 30 amp utilities
- water access via garden hose
- sewer access
- laundry room access
- wireless internet
- use of your address as my mailing address
- location within an hour morning/evening communte to the West Charleston Community College campus (Jones & Charleston) I will work with much less depending on what you've got.

I am able to pay ca. $300 per month depending on services available.

when she asked what we were doing for thanksgiving, i told my 7 year old daughter that we were going to the park to have a picnic at the park. she asked me, "are we going to feed the poor people?"

hmmmmm ... something about her simple question struck me as 'yucky.' i didn't really know why her question bothered me, but it did.

the next day on our way to school, she tells me that she just HAS to bring some canned foods to school so that she and her classmates can have a pizza party ... it hurt me so much that i cried when i dropped her off at school.

"giving to get" is what she is being taught at every turn in our society. the native american concept of the "give away" has been lost in the americanization of thanksgiving. absent is any connection to the realities that all of us may or may not experience at any given moment in our life here on earth what it means to lose everything -- even hope and self-respect.

and, then i wondered, so just how do i teach her the truth of reality, 'but for the grace of god at this moment in my life, that is me,' or, as seal put it, 'time is the space between you and me,' without her having to actually experience that reality?

because, if it is true that the world is a reflection of me, then in reality, i am "poor" like anyone else. and, in reality, at any given moment in time, we could be without a working stove or a home to put it in just like the large number of people on this planet that are in that predicament every single day. recently, many people in california learned how quickly that could happen; same with the people in bangladesh; not to mention those living in war zones; and then there are the folks with those crazy mortgages are learning about it too; and i know there's more than one person in college who knows about that reality ! ! !

how integrated is that economic separation between "us" and "them" in the socio-geo-political fabric of our modern existence . . . how far have we come from just being a member of the tribe along with everyone else? because, ultimately, we are just one tribe, aren't we?

there is no peace without equity, and equity begins within. there is no peace without justice, and justice begins at home.

so, one of my personal reasons for joining becky & her family to Give Peace a Thanks Day in the Park is that while not all those without a place to go on thanksgiving are veterans, while veterans make up 10% of our population, veterans make up 20% of our "homeless" population. they disproportionately end up in physical circumstances that disable them from living the truth that we all, equally, 'have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.' and until there is justice for our veterans, our peace as a nation will grow more and more distant.

it is illegal in the city of las vegas to feed "homeless" people in the park, so don't come and feed "homeless" people, please just come, share a meal and Give Peace a Thanks Day in the Park ... share a song, share a poem, share a smile, share you and the blessing that you are.

I hope Bonedance was splendid and spiritually recharging for everyone who went. And I hope Samhain/Hallows Eve is fun and freeky for all those in the spirit (ahem) of the holiday!

And I want to invite you to a kind-of After-Party. An All-Saints Day Soiree. Traditionally this is a day to honor all god's saints, known and unknown. By birthright I'm claiming this holiday to recognize the inspired Divinity in all of us. We are channels of the Universal Causative Principle, children of Goddess and God(s), and most imporantly, each other's support structure on our way to Illumination. So I humbly request your presence to bless my home with your good vibes and celebrate each other in this season.

Full moon Hike to the hot springs

After Witches and Wizards ball I'd like to invite those of you who would like to dive into portals of deep earth and hot water I'll be heading out to the hotsprings known as gold strike. You can look them up, it's not a far hike and about a 40 minute drive out from my house. BRing plenty of water if you would like to join us for a late night journey thru the gates of transforamtion and healing as we prepare for the next night. The only other thing that you might need is a log of dura wood to burn, please get the eco friendly stuff. The hike is just over a mile with some bouldering and it's a gentle hike other than that. The bouldering involves some scrambles and one cliff with guide rope. IF you have any further questions about this hit me up at the ball or fire away and I'll get back to you as quick as I can.

1305 arizona st. boulder city NV, 89005 there is rumor of a cover charge of 5 bucks but nothing has been confirmed so just be prepared to pay it. this is a 21 and over event. all the festivities start at 10- 11 ish with us performing somewhere inbetween there.... :)

My friend, Kevin runs a meat pie business, and he's going to be selling at the Las Vegas Ren Faire this weekend.
he needs someone to help him sell pies.
He pays $10 per hour cash, + a percentage of tips.
It's 11 hours on Saturday, and 8 hours on Sunday.
Tips usually come to $200 a person for the weekend. (seriously - I'm in the wrong business.)

I know there's someone out there who needs money. (and some free food)
